
Kingston Maurward Students visit Great Western Camping
Great Western Camping has played a part in a course run by nearby Kingston Maurward College for 21 youngsters who are studying the BTEC L3 Subsidiary Diploma in Outdoor Adventure.They visited the shop in their induction week as part of a team building and local area familiarisation exercise whilst completing ‘action research’ by means of a quiz. Every student received a free Great Western Camping T shirt.
Students go on to take The Extended Diploma in Outdoor Adventure, The Professional Outdoor Instructor Course, The Foundation Degree in Outdoor Adventure Management, a University Course or Employment within the Sport and Active Leisure Industry.

Principles and Practices in Outdoor Adventure
The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ knowledge of the underpinning principles and practices of the outdoor industry including all aspects of provision, function and good practice.
Principles of Anatomy in Sport
The aim of this unit is to explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems.
Skills for Land-based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
The aim of this unit is to study two activities in depth, focussing on acquiring the practical skills and techniques essential for safe, efficient and personal independent participation in each activity.
They also study additional qualifications such as “Emergency 1st Aid at Work” or “1st4sport – Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Orienteering”. The course includes 1 practical day per week where they study various activities such as Climbing, Orienteering, Caving, Kayaking – Surf, Sea and General Purpose Canoeing – and Navigation Skills.
They have been busy at weekends this term competing as a college team at Orienteering Competitions in and around Dorset. They have had many successes and are getting really good! The last event saw 2nd & 4th places on the L.Green and 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th all on the Orange for individual performances! They have as a result been invited to enter the Dorset Schools League which includes 6th Form and Colleges.
